Yerington and Tally Battle to the Finish at Region Championship
The MCC Men's Golf team competed this week at the NJCAA South Central District/Region 16 Championship.
Battling through difficult weather conditions, the Wolves turned in a strong performance. MCC posted the second-lowest team score in the final round, but ultimately fell just short of qualifying for the national tournament as a team.
MCC was led by several outstanding individual performances. After winning the Missouri Baptist Invitational earlier this month, Stone Yerington continued his impressive play. Yerington opened the tournament with a 76 (+4) before climbing the leaderboard with a 74 (+2) in the second round. He then found his rhythm in the final round, firing the lowest score of the tournament—a 70 (-2).
Yerington was not alone in the hunt for the top spot. Freshman Nick Talley came out red-hot, carding an opening-round 71 (-1), the lowest round of the first day. His round was highlighted by an eagle on the fifth hole, and he was the only player in the field to shoot under par in round one. Talley battled through a second-round 76 (+4) before bouncing back with a strong final-round 73 (+1).
Both Yerington and Talley finished the tournament at 4-over par, tying for third place overall. Because each team can only send one individual golfer to the national tournament, the two Wolves faced off in a playoff to determine who would advance. After both players escaped trouble on the playoff hole, Yerington calmly converted his par putt to secure his spot at the national tournament, where he will represent MCC.
