2022 Wolves Men's Soccer Season Recap
Although MCC’s overall record of 4-11-2 was below the team’s preseason expectations, the Wolves competed well, with 10 of their 17 games decided by two goals or less.
Although MCC's overall record of 4-11-2 was below the team's preseason expectations, the Wolves competed well, with 10 of their 17 games decided by two goals or less. The highlight matchup of the season were the two overtime games against local rival State Fair Community College. The first contest of the season ended 0-0 after double overtime, with the Wolves Naji Aburas making several key saves to earn the shutout. The return match resulted in a 3-2 Wolves win, with goals from Lukabya Lubingo and Jaques Kisubi in regulation time. Jaques also earned a penalty kick in overtime, which Alan Romero slotted home for the game winner at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Missouri.
For the season, Alan Romero led the Wolves with five goals from the penalty spot. Kangawe Elia Lubingo (4), Jaques Kisubi (4), Matthew Martinez (2), Joel Mwamba (2), Lukabya Lubingo (2), Jorge Venegas (2), Daniel Aguilar (1), Jose Calderon (1) and Oobai Dah (1) also contributed goals for the Wolves this season. Jose Calderon and Omar Cano led the team with three assists each. In goal, Nicholas Gillespie, Naji Aburas and Samuel McClure made a combined 96 saves.
MCC was competitive with NJCAA Region XVI opponents during region play, coming close in losses to eventual top seeds St. Charles Community College and Mineral Area College by scores of 2-0 and 2-1. The MCC Men's Soccer season ended with a loss to St. Louis Community College Archers in the NJCAA Region XVI Quarterfinal game on October 22, 2022; however, the coaches and players are already preparing for and looking toward the 2023 season!
